About this app

Welcome to the Surf Beta!

Surf brings the open social web together and puts you in control.

No algorithms deciding what you see. No walls between communities. Just real conversations and content you care about.

Explore posts from Bluesky, Threads, Mastodon, Pixelfed and more, along with YouTube videos, podcasts and your favorite publications, all in one place.

Build feeds around whatever you’re into, whether it’s a favorite team, a hobby or topic you care about. You can even bring people together by turning feeds into communities.

Here's how to get started:
Create a feed: Select +Create Feed and start building your first feed around something you love.
Discover feeds: Visit Discover Feeds to see what’s being featured from the community.
Set up your Home: Keep up with posts from your feeds and people you follow, all in one timeline
Connect your social accounts: Bring your social world together by connecting Bluesky and Mastodon in your Account Settings

A couple cool Surf feed features:
– Tap into Settings to explore filters and more. For example, you can keep a feed on a specific topic and reduce posts that you’re not interested in.
– Moderate your feed using the three-dot menu next to posts and you can exclude profiles, topics and more.
– Add a #hashtag to see conversations happening across the social web. For example, if you’re a football fan you can add the #NFL (or even your favorite team’s #) to your feed as a source. Posts from Bluesky, Mastodon and Threads that use the hashtag will all show up in your Surf feed, uniting your community across platforms!
- Publish your feed to Bluesky to use your feed when you’re on Bluesky and share it with others.

With Surf set up, you’ve got your own social media experience and can dive into what you want, when you want it. And, since you’re here early, you can make some of the first feeds for others to discover and follow. The next wave of surfers will appreciate you testing the waters!
Download the app and be sure to check out the desktop experience at surf.social.

I think there's definitely room for this app to grow and improve, but right now this seems like a worse version of Bluesky (quote posts don't even work!) stapled to a worse version of a basic RSS reader app, with no dark mode and lots of whitespace so a lot less content is shown on-screen... and I'm not entirely certain I need both experiences in a single app. Maybe if I was really active on Bluesky and Mastodon and was desperate to have both feeds in one app.

Finally got my invitation to join after months on the wait-list. I opened the app to see that it's not even scaling correctly on my Pixel 8 Pro, and all kinds of glitches adding feeds and profile info. Dunno what's been going on this whole time with all the bugs still in place.

interesting concept, still playing around with it. it hangs a bit when there are a lot of sources to load (e.g. >200). Lags on "back" commands like previous page. the "Read" page on source profiles is too busy/cluttered imo; the background images are distracting and make reading hard. first reaction is it's way too busy of any app to be useful for anything beyond making browsing look "cooler" rather than more functional. UI is clunky, swipe nav is poorly integrated/considered
