Encryption Protocol
First and foremost, all of your conversations are stored in end-to-end encryption. You never have to worry about your data leaking out and no one can see your messages except for you, not even the Pulse SMS Team! With Pulse SMS, you get privacy and peace of mind, right out of the box.

Privacy Protection Proof
In technical terms, we use PBKDF2 to encrypt your password and use it as a key to encrypt messages and conversations.

Technical Encryption Overview

1) When an account is created, we generate two salts. One to use with authentication and one for end-to-end encryption.

2) The one that we use with login is straight-forward and normal. We store a version of your password, hashed against the first salt, and authenticate you against this hash.

3) For the encryption, we hash your password against salt #2 and store it locally on your device (computer/tablet/phone). Having this key is the only way that you can decrypt messages. Since no one else has the password that was hashed against the second salt, no one else will be able to decrypt anything.

We share our privacy protocol publicly so our users have peace of mind knowing their password is never stored anywhere and without that password, there is no way to create the secret key used for encrypting and decrypting the content stored in the backend.

*Backups and registered user accounts for all users (free users, subscribers, one time purchases) are deleted after 60 days of inactivity.

Supported Platforms
Pulse SMS has a web app that you can use. It also has native apps for tablets, MacOS, Windows, Google Chrome, Firefox, Linux, and even Android TV. Check out all of our platforms, along with screenshots, here: https://home.pulsesms.app/overview/

The only reason I use Pulse vs my phones original texting system is because Pulse offers a widget. I don't know what happened but the widget no longer works. I tried reaching out to the developers but I haven't received a reply. My app is up to date, it just stopped working one day. Unfortunately, I'll have to find a new texting app if the problem doesn't get resolved quickly. Also the constant FULL SCREEN ad that pops up when I go to open a text message is absurd!!!

Thanks for the feedback. The widget issue has been fixed in the latest build (3034), so please update, then restart your device or re-add the widget. Full-screen ads appear in the free version and are removed with Premium. If anything still isn’t working, contact us via Side Menu > Support > Email.

Used Pulse SMS from the start — it was genuinely the best desktop-integrated texting app available. Going open source felt like a bright future. Then Maple Media bought it and everything declined. Group texting broke completely, and even a full phone reset didn't fix it. I've tried returning several times over the past year — same issues, and it keeps getting worse. I even hold a lifetime license, but no price makes the constant frustration worth it. Such a shame.

Thanks for sharing your long-time experience. Group texting issues are usually fixed by setting Pulse SMS as the default app, turning on mobile data, and checking MMS settings like Max Image Size or APNs. If it’s still failing, please contact us via Side Menu > Support > Email so we can review it.

I've been using this app for years and it's always been great, but for the past few weeks the app has been refusing to let me send gifs. Every time I try, the message instantly fails. Now, just today, I can no longer send screenshots either! The message bounces back instantly saying "failed to send!" I don't know what happened, but it's super frustrating and I've about had it. I'll be searching for another sms app if this keeps up.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. GIFs and screenshots use MMS, and instant failures are often tied to carrier limits or settings. Make sure mobile data is on, MMS and auto-download are enabled, Pulse SMS is the default app, and battery optimization is disabled. If it continues, contact us via Side Menu > Support > Email.
