Golden Nugget opened August 30th, 1946 in downtown Las Vegas on historic Fremont Street. My favorite feature of the Golden Nugget has origins that date back to September 26th, 1980. That day, Kevin Hillier was metal detecting in his tiny hometown of Wedderburn, Australia when he discovered a 61-pound nugget of gold. The massive nugget titled “The Hand of Faith” is the largest golden nugget ever found with a metal detector. The next year, Hillier sold his incredible find to the Golden Nugget casino for over one million dollars. The nugget has remained on display in the casino lobby ever since where visitors can take a photo next to the infamous piece of gold.
