Hello, Aaron here! This past weekend, I had the privilege of attending the 2025 Pechanga Pow Wow in Temecula, California, and it was an incredible experience! However, it didn't come without challenges-starting with a small mistake that might have cost me all my footage. After Saturday afternoon's grand entry, I accidentally changed my camera's video codec, and now my computer can't process the files. With 13 hours of footage from Saturday and 6 hours from Sunday, I've spent countless hours testing editing software and media encoders. If I can't fix it soon, I may only be able to upload the grand entry and call the rest a loss. On a brighter note, I was able to make it to Pechanga thanks to my friend Sooya Davis. Sooya needed to attend because he made custom jackets for the Littlechild family's special during the pow wow. He called me earlier in the week, asking if he could carpool, and I suggested he crash on a friend's couch while I stuck to my usual plan of sleeping in the car. After hearing this, the Littlechild family generously purchased a hotel room for both of us. I'm so grateful for their kindness-it's acts like these that remind me why I love being part of this community 🥰 Event Overview: The Pechanga Pow Wow takes place at the Pechanga Casino, just 45 minutes from Disneyland. Parking and admission are free, but the overall cost can add up quickly if you're staying at the casino hotel or dining there. It's a 3-day event, but I only attended Saturday and Sunday. Bart Powakee, the MC, kept the energy high with nonstop dancing, lots of humor, and even a fireworks show on Saturday night. Dancing continued until 2am on Saturday-something I didn't anticipate but thoroughly enjoyed! Food & Amenities: The event featured a food vendor circle outside the conference room. Fry bread prices were around $8, and I treated myself to a pork tamale plate with rice and beans for $10. During the dinner break, I found a food voucher intended for singers and dancers, and after some guidance from security, I was able to enjoy a warm bowl of posole. It was a simple yet heartwarming gesture that makes a huge difference, especially with rising food costs. Challenges: Seating continues to be a major issue at Pechanga. Once grand entry starts, finding a spot in the bleachers is nearly impossible. Many families reserve seats overnight with blankets, so late arrivals are left standing or sitting on the floor. As a guerrilla filmmaker, I spent most of my time on my knees or shins. This year, the pow wow committee was more relaxed, allowing media inside the barriers, which made filming a bit easier. After Saturday, my knees were sore, so I picked up a gardening knee pad from Walmart, which helped on Sunday. Final Thoughts: The Pechanga Pow Wow is truly a one-of-a-kind event, filled with beautiful dancing, incredible singing, and a welcoming community atmosphere. Despite the technical challenges with my footage, I'm grateful for the experience and the kindness shown to me throughout the weekend.
