The iconic Tropicana casino hotel in Las Vegas came crumbling down during a controlled demolition, following a spectacular fireworks show on Wednesday, October 9. Isidro Aleman captured video of onlookers taking in the show and screams and cheers as the two buildings were imploded. Local media said the Tropicana, a fixture of Las Vegas since 1957, was being demolished to make way for the Las Vegas Ballpark, the future home of the Athletics, formerly of Oakland. #lasvegas #topicanahotel The New York Post is your source for breaking news, news about New York, sports, business, entertainment, opinion, real estate, culture, fashion, and more. (30 Jun 2020) NEW MEXICO TRIBE TRANSFORMS OLD CASINO INTO MOVIE STUDIO A Native American tribe in northern New Mexico has opened up a movie studio to attract big productions in what is believed to be a first tribal-owned large studio in the United States. The Tesuque Pueblo recently converted its former casino north of Santa Fe into a studio campus called Camel Rock Studios with more than 25,000 square feet (2,322.58 square meters) of shooting space. The tribe also has set aside more than 17,000 acres (6879.66 hectares) on the pueblo amid the Sangre de Cristo Mountains for additional filming. The move came after the Universal Pictures feature "News of the World," starring Tom Hanks, sought to the rent space from the old casino, according to Timothy Brown, president and CEO of the Pueblo of Tesuque Development Corporation. Before that, the area sat empty and tribal officials hadn't decided the fate of the campus. But after touring the facility, the production decided to film scenes there. That convinced Tesuque Pueblo officials to turn the empty building into a movie studio, primarily since Netflix and NBCUniversal have invested in New Mexico studios in recent years, said Tunte Vigil, Tesuque Pueblo's business development associate. "I know the (tribal) governor thinks this is a great opportunity for the pueblo to get into this industry," Vigil said. "The market is really open right now, and the (tribal government) wants to bring different businesses to the pueblo." But not yet. The pueblo and most of New Mexico remain under strict COVID-19 restrictions and all movie productions are on hold. Brown said that that hasn't stopped potential productions from contacting the pueblo and asking to reserve studio time. Cheyenne and Arapaho filmmaker Chris Eyre, a Santa Fe resident who's an advisor to Camel Rock Studio, said the studio's unique aspect is that as a former casino, it has a lot of standing sets. Or productions can build their own sets in a former ballroom thanks to the mill on-site. The tribal land can also be used to showcase the Middle East and the American Southwest, Eyer said. Productions can also use a rare water tower for water scenes, he added. For decades, Tesuque Pueblo has been the site of several movies, from the 1955 film "The Man from Laramie," starring James Stewart to the 1988 movie "Young Guns" with Emilio Estevez and Kiefer Sutherland. The studio also comes at a time where Native American writers, from Pulitzer Prize-winning Cheyenne and Arapaho author Tommy Orange and Inupiaq American poet Joan Naviyuk Kane, are transforming American Literature and forcing Hollywood to incorporate Native American stories. Eyer said he's hopeful the new studio will foster a new movement in storytelling. "Native Americans are natural storytellers," he said. "What better place to do it?"
