On November 21, 1980 a fire hit the MGM and 87 people died in the blaze. After 8 months the hotel was rebuilt. Over $223,000,000 was paid out to the victims or their families following one of the largest lawsuits of that time. Bally's Gaming purchased the MGM in 1986 for 592 million. The casino is currently owned and operated by Caesars entertainment.
