This adults-only (21+) property, owned by Caesars Entertainment, blends modern elegance with vintage charm, featuring 188 rooms, including 19 suites, designed with hardwood floors, plush furnishings, and burgundy accents. Rooms include amenities like 55-inch flat-screen TVs, rain showers, and Muk bath products, with select rooms offering stunning Strip views. The Cromwell’s sophisticated vibe is enhanced by its high-tech virtual concierge, Ivy, providing real-time guest services via text, and eKey keyless entry technology. Historically, the site has a rich legacy. It began as the Desert Villa Motel in 1958, later renamed Empey’s Desert Villa, and then the Times Square Motel in 1974, before closing that year. Plans for a shopping center in 1975 fell through due to insufficient parking space. In 1977, Michael Gaughan demolished the motel to build the Barbary Coast Hotel and Casino, which opened on March 2, 1979, with 150 rooms and a Victorian-themed casino featuring stained glass murals, including the notable Garden of Earthly Delights. Despite opposition from nearby resorts over traffic concerns, the Barbary Coast thrived, adding 50 rooms in 1983 by converting a parking floor and boasting one of Las Vegas’ most popular sportsbooks by 1987. In 2004, Boyd Gaming acquired the Barbary Coast through its purchase of Coast Casinos, and in 2005, bought the 1.8-acre land for $15.7 million, recognizing its prime location at the Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road intersection, known as the Four Corners. In 2006, Boyd traded the property to Harrah’s Entertainment (now Caesars Entertainment) for other Strip assets. Harrah’s briefly closed the Barbary Coast, reopening it on March 1, 2007, as Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall and Saloon, named after founder William Harrah. On February 4, 2013, Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall closed for a $185 million renovation, transforming it into a luxury boutique hotel. Initially planned as a Gansevoort property, the name changed to The Cromwell in December 2013 after disputes with Gansevoort’s investors, drawing inspiration from a Pacific Ocean current discovered by Townsend Cromwell. The Cromwell opened partially on April 21, 2014, with full operations, including its casino and Giada De Laurentiis’ namesake restaurant, commencing on May 21, 2014. The 40,000-square-foot casino offers 66 table games, 434 slot machines, and a reserved gaming salon, while a new sportsbook was added in 2017. The Cromwell features Drai’s Beach Club and Nightclub, a 65,000-square-foot rooftop venue with panoramic views, elevating Las Vegas’ day and nightlife scene. Dining options include Giada, offering Italian cuisine with Californian influences, and Eatwell, a casual counter for gourmet snacks and salads. The property also houses Bound, a chic lobby bar, and Interlude Lounge for nightly entertainment. In 2020, The Cromwell became adults-only, aligning with its upscale, adult-oriented atmosphere, though guests can access family-friendly pools at nearby Flamingo or Caesars Palace. During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Cromwell closed in March 2020 and remained shuttered longer than most Strip resorts, reopening on October 29, 2020. Notably, it hosted the second season of CBS’s Love Island, relocated from Fiji due to travel restrictions. In March 2025, Caesars announced a partnership with Lisa Vanderpump to rebrand The Cromwell as The Vanderpump Hotel by early 2026, with renovations occurring while the property remains open. This transformation marks Vanderpump’s first hotel venture, building on her successful Las Vegas restaurant ventures. The Cromwell’s prime location, near landmarks like the Bellagio and LINQ Promenade, and its boutique size make it a unique gem on the Strip, though recent reviews note declining service and outdated amenities, with some guests praising the staff’s friendliness.
