Dezember 2001 erschien in Japan mit "Sonic Adventure 2 Battle" ein erweiterter Dreamcast-Port auf dem Nintendo GameCube und mit "Sonic Advance" ein komplett neues 2D-Jump 'n' Run auf dem Game Boy Advance. Für die USA war es am 3. Februar 2002, für Europa am 8. März 2002 so weit! "Sonic Advance" baut auf das, was Sonic einst populär gemacht hat: Reinen und turbolenten 2D-Jump 'n' Run-Spielspaß. Bereits im Jahre 2000 erschien für das Neo Geo Pocket Color mit "Sonic Pocket Adventure" ein klassisches Sonic, für das das Sonic Team die Entwickler von SNK in ihre Arbeit einspannte. Diese hatten sich inzwischen mit ihrem eigenen Entwicklerstudio "Dimps" selbstständig gemacht und wurden folglich auch für "Sonic Advance" und viele folgende Handheld-Sonics vom Sonic Team zur Brust genommen. In sieben regulären Zonen werden Ringe gesammelt, Dr. Eggman besiegt und bestenfalls die Special Stages für Chaos Emeralds erreicht. Denn nach der finalen achten Zone gibt es noch ein verstecktes Super-Sonic-Finale, wenn Sonic alle sieben Chaos Emeralds zusammengetragen hat! Das Spiel war ein Erfolg und bekam nicht grundlos mit "Sonic Advance 2" und "Sonic Advance 3" weitere Nachfolger auf demselben System, ehe es gewissermaßen mit der "Sonic Rush"-Serie weitergeht. Es sollte auch nicht vergessen werden, dass das Game "Sonic N" für Nokia N-Gage ebenfalls ein Port von "Sonic Advance" ist. Zudem erschien "Sonic Advance" in Japan 2011 für Android und 2015 im Wii U eShop.
