La nueva creación del ingeniero Birkigt era un automóvil completamente diferente a su predecesor, el afamado H6 y que había colocado a la Hispano-Suiza en la élite del automovilismo de alta gama. El H6 se presentó en 1919 y los directivos de la marca pensaron que era el momento de crear un nuevo modelo, que fuera más adecuado a las nuevas exigencias de los clientes y así poder competir con Mercedes-Benz, Rolls-Royce, Isotta Fraschini o los americanos Packard o Cadillac. Hispano-Suiza optó por un motor V12 para el nuevo modelo, pero a diferencia de lo que cabía esperar, no se usó el motor de aviación que ya tenían y cuyo resultado estaba más que probado satisfactoriamente. Se desarrolló un nuevo V12, con válvulas en cabeza y un solo árbol de levas emplazado en el centro de la V. Los 12 cilindros sumaban una cilindrada de 9,424 litros y era capaz de lanzar las dos tonelada de peso del coche a 170 km /h. Los J12 se fabricaron en su totalidad en la factoría francesa de Bois Colombes y el cliente podía elegir entre tres tipos de chasis, uno corto de 3.421 mm de distancia entre ejes, otro normal de 3.810 mm y el largo, de 4.010 mm. Una vez elegido el chasis, el cliente lo llevaba el carrocero, quien «vestía» el J12 de acuerdo al gusto de cada cliente. Por eso no hay dos iguales. Los más importantes carroceros de la época como Vanvooren, Kellner, Chapron, Fernandez y Darrin o Saoutchik fabricaron carrocerías para los J12. El precio del chasis, sin la carrocería, doblaba al de un Packard o un Rolls-Royce Phantom II. Fuera cual fuera la carrocería elegida por su afortunado propietario, el J12 siempre se mostraba como una máquina ágil, de fácil manejo e incluso deportiva, que distaba mucho de la imagen que podía dar de «camión de lujo». Se cree que entorno a 120 coches salieron de la fábrica francesa entre 1931 y 1939, todos ellos a manos de importantes personajes de las finanzas y la industria, así como a casas reales, aristócratas o artistas. La familia Rothschild, el Rey de Rumanía o Pablo Picasso fueron entre otros, propietarios de un Hispano Suiza T-68. «Excepto cuando el motor está frío, no hay ningún ruido bajo el capó. Spooky Gulch & Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyons - Escalante, Utah These slot canyons are incredible. Some of the more impressive slot canyons I've seen that don't require technical gear to get through. They're also pretty easy to get to with just about any vehicle, as long as Hole in the Rock Road is dry. The reason they aren't too well known or crowded is their location; located in Grand Staircase-Escalante outside Escalante, Utah, they're just....kind of in the middle of nowhere. But still definitely worth visiting. The hike is pretty straightforward and fairly easy. And as we found out this trip, there is another nice set of narrows - Dry Creek Narrows - accessible from the same trailhead. If we'd known this, we would have left earlier and hiked all the way through the Dry Creek Narrows as well as Peek-A-Boo and Spooky Gulch. But we didn't know that, so we did a quick hike partway into Dry Creek Narrows, then turned around and headed to Peek-A-Boo. (We like starting at Peek-A-Boo because that saves our favorite - Spooky Gulch - for last. But you can do the loop either way.) The entry to Peek-A-Boo is fairly intimidating. But honestly, if you can't get into it, you might struggle with some of the other obstacles in the two slot canyons. Assuming you make it to the top, you'll immediately be greeted with double arches inside Peek-A-Boo. The canyon alternates between slotted sections and more open ones from there. Once you're through Peek-A-Boo, you cross over a ridge and drop into Spooky Gulch. The canyon is impressive right from the start, as you can see in the video. You're greeted with a beautiful corridor with interesting rock veins, followed shortly with another arch. Then it's on to the real fun; a short but satisfying hike through claustrophobia-inducing narrows. There is one major obstacle in this canyon (aside from the tightness of it), and that's the boulder fall. When I went years ago (solo), I had to drop down from the top. This was a (maybe) 10 foot drop that I got halfway down before realizing I was stuck hanging there, no idea if the ground was 1" or 6 feet below. I may have slightly panicked, but you can't prove it. This time, it was a fun crawl through a rabbit hole that had been opened up under the boulders. And that's about it. I'm gonna start working on another video now. Enjoy!
