Casino Royale Theme Song James Bond Daniel Craig Casino Royale is the twenty-first film in the James Bond film series, based on the novel of the same name by Ian Fleming, directed by New Zealander Martin Campbell and released in 2006. It is the first film in the franchise to feature Daniel Craig in the lead role of agent 007 (who replaced Pierce Brosnan), as well as the third adaptation of Casino Royale (the first version was released in 1954, and the second in 1967). The plot chronicles James Bond's beginnings as a secret spy, just after he obtained his license to kill. After preventing a terrorist attack at Miami International Airport, Bond falls in love with Vesper Lynd, an agent from Her Majesty's Treasury assigned to provide him with the necessary funds to thwart a high-stakes poker tournament organized by Le Chiffre. The story continues in Quantum of Solace. Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and Paul Haggis wrote the script, with Haggis rewriting the story's climax. The main cast includes Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Mads Mikkelsen, Judi Dench, Jeffrey Wright, and Giancarlo Giannini. In early 2005, at the end of production on Die Another Day, Pierce Brosnan (who had previously played the agent) announced that he would no longer be reprising the role because he was 50 years old at the time, and the producers wanted to replace him with a younger actor. According to Campbell, the only actor seriously considered for the lead role was Henry Cavill; however, he was too young to play 007. Finally, after several months, it was revealed that Craig would be the new Bond in the film franchise. However, the decision to remove Brosnan from the role of James Bond sparked a heated controversy among fans of the series regarding Craig's casting, with some attempting to boycott the production of Casino Royale in protest.[4] Despite this, upon its premiere on November 16, 2006, the film was critically acclaimed, particularly Craig's performance. Unlike the previous productions, the 2006 Casino Royale adaptation is Eon Productions' only adaptation of a Fleming novel, and functions as a "reboot" for the franchise, establishing a new chronology and narrative framework that does not intend to be preceded by (or, in its case, serve as a prequel to) any other film. [5] This not only meant that, for the first time in over four decades of continuity, the series could take a fresh approach, but also allowed for a less experienced and more vulnerable Bond to be shown. [6] Eon produced the film for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Columbia Pictures, and became the first film to be co-produced by Columbia, the production company that originally distributed the non-canonical 1967 version. It was also the highest-grossing film in the franchise at the time of its release, not adjusting for inflation, with a total of US$599,045,960 worldwide.
