Did you know that for Casino, Joe Pesci’s character Nicky Santoro was based on real life mafia enforcer Tony Spilotro. He was partnered up with Robert DeNiro’s character of Sam Rothstein, who was based on Frank Rosenthal. It is believed that Spilotro took care of twenty-five people for the mob and the Las Vegas crime rate went up by seventy percent after he arrived. Pesci broke a rib in his final scene in the movie. DeNiro wears around seventy different suits. They had a different one for nearly every scene he was in. The movie was mostly shot on location in Vegas. The Tangiers Casino in the movie is fictional, but was based on the Stardust Casino, which closed in 2006. The actual casino we see in the movie is the Riviera Casino, which also closed in 2015. They used real dealers and pit bosses in the movie for authenticity, but they wouldn’t let them into the casino’s real count room, so they built a set. The movie has a lot of improvisation and the desert scene with Pesci and DeNiro in particular is heavily improvised. Director Martin Scorsese merely told the actors where to begin and where to end the conversation. The rest was up to them.
