The renaming harkens back to Binion’s Horseshoe, a downtown gambling hall where the World Series of Poker began. The Horseshoe now shares a corner with the Bellagio and its fountains, Caesars Palace and its statues, and the venerable Flamingo resort. Jack Binion, 86, a former casino executive in Las Vegas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Illinois and Indiana, and member of the American Gaming Association’s Gaming Hall of Fame and the World Series of Poker's Poker Hall of Fame, is scheduled to be among the notables at Friday's event. Binion's father, former Texas gambler Benny Binion, started the World Series of Poker in 1970 as an invitation-only game at the Horseshoe Club, a downtown hotel he founded in 1951. A trophy was awarded to a winner, Johnny Moss, picked by the other players. Harrah's Entertainment acquired the rights to the event in 2004 and moved it to the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino. A year later, Harrah's bought Caesars Entertainment, which was bought in 2020 by Eldorado Resorts and kept the name Caesars Entertainment Corp. Today, the tournament runs for more than seven weeks, beginning May 31. It drew nearly 200,000 players from around the world last year at Bally's, and awarded almost $350 million in prize money. The 26-story, two-tower hotel that now hosts it opened in late 1973 as the MGM Grand, with 2,100 rooms, one of the largest hotels in the world. The deadly fire seven years later, one of the worst in U.S. history, led to laws requiring fire safety and sprinkler systems in hotels and high-rises.
