Thousands of seniors living in parts of Prince George's County can now access up to $5 million in financial relief to help with expenses such as mortgage, rent, property tax, and utility payments, as well as lawn cutting assistance. "It’s really about helping our seniors," Edward Burroughs, the Prince George's County Council Chair, said. Burroughs launched the program for those 65 and over living in District 8, which he represents. "We have so many seniors across the county that are literally choosing between paying their property taxes and going to the grocery store," Burroughs added. "I got a call from a senior citizen last year who is 99 years old, who cannot afford to pay her property taxes, and that’s the last thing that we want our seniors worried about." The program is funded by the MGM National Harbor Local Impact Grant, which was established when the casino was built to ensure residents living around it directly benefit from casino revenue. "It’s important to be able to use the money that is rightfully ours to benefit the community," said Sharon Lawrence, who is participating in the program.
